Snacks We Love

Page 2

Kettle Crisps Fig Newtons
Kettle Crisps
At last, a low-fat potato chip that actually tastes good. Kettle Crisps are baked, not fried, which means only 15 of the 110 calories in a one-ounce serving come from fat. (Most leading brands get half of their calories from fat.) Lightly salted, Kettle Crisps really taste like potatoes. And one serving supplies two grams of fiber. If baked chips won't do, put down that bag labeled Kettle Crisps and grab some Kettle Chips. Though a one-ounce serving has 150 calories, 80 of them from fat, these chips are unusual: The oil they're fried in is almost entirely monounsaturated, as is olive oil. If it's tortilla chips you're after, grab a bag of Mexi-Snax's Pico de Gallo Chips, made with plenty of south-of-the-border sizzle but relatively little oil. One ounce has 140 calories, yet only 50 of them are from fat.
Fig Newtons
Craving a cookie? You'll find sweeet simplicity in a good old Fig Newton. Whether you buy the snack pack (three grams of fiber, 210 calories) or a regular package of bars (one gram of fiber and 110 calories per two-cookie serving), you'll do well. No, a couple of Newtons don't equal a piece of fresh fruit. But they're low in fat and respectably endowed with potassium, iron, and calcium. Another good choice: Golden Fruit Raisin Biscuits. Unlike many bars, which have so little fruit that it's down near the bottom of the ingredient list, these cookies put raising in first place. Although they contain a dab of hydrogenated oil (as do Fig Newtons), fat merely accounts for 15 of each biscuit's 80 calories.
