Prunes, Prunes: Healthiest FruitPrunes. The healthiest fruit? So it seems. In addition to their well documented high fiber attributes, they are an excellent source for antioxidants. According to Tufts University, the magical prune was found to have the highest level of antioxidants among all fruits and vegetables. Other fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants are raisins, blueberries, blackberries, kale, strawberries and spinach. For best results, it is recommended that you 1) eat a variety of the different foods listed above and 2) eat up to 10 servings per day. So, why are antioxidants important? In simple terms, antioxidants keep your insides from rusting. Just as metal reacts with oxygen to form rust, your body reacts with oxygen in a way that can cause cell damage. Antioxidants inhibit cell damage by going to work before your body can react with oxygen. Here's more to chew on: Prunes provide quick energy and are high in fiber. Prunes are also a good source of potassium. These qualities make prunes an excellent ready-to-eat snack for "on the go" folks. Source: Fit&Fun Magazine August, 1999
